1988 Tour de France
Delgado's Tour, short, steep and shadowed by a test the rules could not punish.
The 1988 Tour de France was the 75th edition, held from 4 to 24 July over 22 stages and 3,286 km, and was won by Pedro Delgado, with the top three places all taken by climbing specialists. Nearly 1,000 km shorter than recent editions, it was no easier, with five consecutive mountain stages including a mountain time trial. Eddy Planckaert won the points classification, Steven Rooks the mountains and combination classifications, Erik Breukink the young rider prize and Frans Maassen the intermediate sprints, while PDM won both team classifications. Delgado failed a doping test during the race but went unpunished because the substance was not yet on the UCI's list. A new UCI cap of 200 riders cut the field to 22 teams of nine, 198 riders.
