1991 Tour de France
Induráin's first, the start of a five-year reign.
The 1991 Tour de France was the 78th edition, held from 6 to 28 July over 22 stages and 3,914 km, and was won by Miguel Induráin, whose Banesto team also took the team classification. Djamolidine Abdoujaparov won the points classification despite nearly crashing out on the final stage, Claudio Chiappucci the mountains and Álvaro Mejía the young rider prize. Twenty-two teams of nine rode: sixteen qualified through the FICP team ranking of May 1991 and six received wildcards after the Giro and the Dauphiné. Of the 198 starters, 38 were riding their first Tour. Defending champion Greg LeMond had started as the bookmakers' favourite for a fourth win.
