1993 Tour de France
Three in a row for Induráin.
The 1993 Tour de France was the 80th edition, held from 3 to 25 July over 20 stages and 3,714 km. Miguel Induráin, winner of the previous two years and of that spring's Giro d'Italia, defended his title; Djamolidine Abdoujaparov won the points classification and Tony Rominger the mountains. Feeling that 198 riders were no longer safe on roads full of traffic islands, the organisers cut the field to twenty teams of nine, fourteen chosen on ranking and six by wildcard, one of which was meant to be shared by Chazal and Subaru until Subaru declined. The route, unveiled in October 1992, was expected by most team directors to be harder than 1992; its highest point was the Cime de la Bonette at 2,802 m on stage 11.
