1958 Tour de France
Eleven changes of leader, then Gaul settles it against the clock.
The 1958 Tour de France was the 45th edition, held from 26 June to 19 July over 24 stages and 4,319 km. The yellow jersey changed hands a record eleven times, and the race was only decided in the time trial on the penultimate stage, when Charly Gaul of Luxembourg built a margin of more than three minutes. In the final sprint André Darrigade, already a five-stage winner, collided with a race official, who died of his injuries eleven days later. 120 riders started in ten teams of twelve: national teams from France, Italy, Belgium and Spain, combined Dutch/Luxembourg and Swiss/West German teams, an Internationals team and three French regional teams. Defending champion Jacques Anquetil had refused to share the French leadership with Louison Bobet.
