1957 Tour de France
Anquetil's first, on a French team that won nearly everything.
The 1957 Tour de France was the 44th edition, held from 27 June to 20 July over 22 stages and 4,669 km, and gave Jacques Anquetil the first of his five victories. The French national team was overwhelming: it won the team classification and almost every daily team prize, took twelve stage wins, lost only one rider, 1956 winner Roger Walkowiak, and had Forestier win the points classification with Bergaud second in the mountains. Only once was the yellow jersey not on a French back, when Barone took it after the seventh stage. A dispute with French television was settled at the last moment, so the race was broadcast, and a mobile press room with modern equipment improved life for the journalists.
