1938 Tour de France
Bartali's first Tour, on a race rebuilt around national teams.
The 1938 Tour de France was the 32nd edition, held from 5 to 31 July over 21 stages and 4,694 km, and was won by the Italian Gino Bartali, who also took the mountains classification. Bonuses were reduced: a stage winner now gained one minute plus his margin over the runner-up, capped at 75 seconds, and the first rider over a classified summit one minute. The team-start stages were dropped in favour of two individual time trials, and after the 1937 troubles the individual categories were abolished, so the race was contested by national teams, with two extra French squads, the Bleuets and the Cadets, for riders left out of the national team.
