1939 Tour de France
Maes's second Tour, the last before the war.
The 1939 Tour de France was the 33rd edition, held from 10 to 30 July over 4,224 km on the eve of the Second World War. Italy, Germany and Spain refused to send teams, so defending champion Gino Bartali could not ride; to fill the field Belgium sent two teams and France five. The Belgian Sylvère Maes won the race and the mountains classification. From the second stage to the seventh the last rider in the classification was eliminated each day, and stage 16b was the first mountain time trial. It would be the last Tour for eight years, until 1947.
