The Depths

Where the light of Torchlight dies and only the brave dare descend.

The Depths is a late-game zone in Torchlight, the 2009 action RPG developed by Runic Games. It is a dark, subterranean stretch of the world that players traverse after working through the earlier overland and cavernous regions, serving as a penultimate challenge before the final Tower sequence.

As one of the more oppressive and atmospheric areas in the game, The Depths shifts the tone from the open Wasteland into claustrophobic, shadow-drenched passages where the enemy roster intensifies and the loot you pick up begins to rival the gear found in the Tower itself.

Lore & Background

The Depths are said to be the oldest passages beneath the world—tunnels carved long before the Village of Torchlight was founded, before the Swamp was drained, before the Mines were first struck. The lore surrounding the area is sparse, as few who enter speak of what they find below. The stone is slick with moisture, the air hangs thick, and the faint bioluminescence that replaces any natural light gives the corridors a sickly green-blue glow that makes every shadow look like a threat.

In the broader narrative of Torchlight, the Depths exist as a threshold: the last stretch of wilderness a hero must cross before confronting whatever waits in the Tower. The enemies here are no longer the goblin raiders or swamp trolls of the early zones; they are the remnants of something older, something that has dwelt in the dark for millennia and regards the intrusion of torchlight with genuine hostility.

Runic Games designed the zone to ratchet up both the visual and mechanical difficulty. The corridors narrow, the enemy density increases, and the loot tables shift toward the higher-tier gear that players will need for the Tower's final encounters. It is, in practical terms, the game's way of saying: you are almost ready, but not yet.

Reader's Guide

You drop into a low-ceilinged stone corridor and the first thing that hits you is the smell—wet rock, old iron, something faintly organic. The light source is a thin band of bioluminescent moss along the ceiling, casting everything in a cold green wash, and the only sound is your own breathing and the distant drip of water finding a crack in the floor. Your torch, if you carry one, barely reaches the far wall.

Enemy density here is noticeably higher than the Wasteland. Expect packs of spectral and undead-type foes that close quickly and hit hard, often in groups of three or four. The zone gates access to the higher-tier gear you will need for the Tower, so farming or clearing the area thoroughly before pushing forward is standard practice. The Depths sit between the Wasteland and the Tower in the progression chain; there is no skipping it, and the loot you pull here is your last real chance to gear up before the final stretch.

Fan note: The Depths is the zone most Torchlight players remember as the moment the game stopped being fun and started being a test. The claustrophobic corridors, the relentless enemy spawns, the way the green light makes every frame feel like a horror game—people still talk about the first time they got cornered by a full pack down here and had to burn every potion in their belt to get out.
