Torchlight I: The Void's Assault

One torch, one loyal pet, and a world Alric and the Ordrak are swallowing whole.

Torchlight I: The Void's Assault is the core single-player campaign of the 2009 action RPG Torchlight, developed by Runic Games and published by Perfect World. The player takes on the role of an adventurer, a lone hero whose quest is to confront the dark forces threatening the world, and must travel across a fractured fantasy world to stop the villainous Alric and the ancient evil Ordrak.

The campaign serves as the narrative and mechanical foundation for the entire Torchlight franchise, establishing the world's tone, its class-based character system, and the iconic dog or cat companion that became a series hallmark.

Lore & Background

In the world of Torchlight, the forces of darkness are not a single creature but a creeping, dimensional wound—a place where reality thins and something ancient and hungry presses through. Its tendrils manifest as shadowy creatures that pour into the land, corrupting forests, caves, and settlements. The adventurers, brave souls who answer the call, carry a flame that resists the darkness, and each new hero is sent out to push the evil back. The world the player traverses is a patchwork of frontier towns, overgrown wilds, and increasingly hostile zones where Alric's influence grows thicker.

Each region feels like a frontier settlement on the edge of collapse: half-abandoned, lit by the hero's steady glow, with townsfolk who are brave but clearly out of their depth against what seeps in from the dark. The dog or cat, a loyal and oddly affectionate companion, follows the hero as both a friend and a surprisingly effective combat partner. Runic Games designed the campaign to feel like a single, escalating road trip into the heart of the problem.

Alric and the Ordrak do not monologue or scheme in a conventional villain's way. They simply grow, and the hero simply walks toward them, torch raised, loyal pet at their side.

Reader's Guide

The campaign follows the Torchbearer from a frontier starting point through progressively wilder and more corrupted regions, each one bringing the player closer to the heart of the Void. Early areas introduce the class-based combat system and the Muffalo companion, while later zones escalate the threat with denser Void creatures and environmental hazards that reflect the encroaching dimensional wrongness. The final act brings the Torchbearer face-to-face with the Void itself.

[SPOILER FLAG: The climax of the campaign is a direct confrontation with the Void as a singular, overwhelming presence rather than a traditional named boss. The player's torch and accumulated abilities are the means of pushing it back, and the resolution is less a clean victory than a hard-won reprieve—the dark is driven back, but not destroyed.]

For the player, the campaign is structured as a linear journey with branching exploration, loot-driven character growth, and a pet that scales alongside you. Runic left the broader cosmology of the Void deliberately open: it is presented as a force of nature more than a character with motives, which gives the world a quiet, mythic dread rather than a conventional good-versus-evil framing. The Torchbearer's identity is left to the player, and the Muffalo's loyalty is never questioned, grounding the epic scope in a small, stubborn companionship.
