The City of Torchlight
The Ember-mining boomtown above the dungeon.
Torchlight is the mining boomtown that gives the 2009 game its name. It is built above a rich vein of Ember, a mysterious ore with the power to imbue people and items with magic, and adventurers are drawn to it seeking the substance and the enchanted items it creates.

Lore & Background
The town is the game's single hub: the player periodically returns to buy and sell items with NPC vendors and pick up quests before going back into the caverns and dungeons below. Exploring them reveals that Ember has a corrupting influence that brought down past civilizations - the dungeon is a "layer cake of ruined civilizations". In Torchlight II the town is destroyed by the Alchemist from the first game.
