Seanchan

Vast empire from across the Aryth Ocean that enslaves female channelers.

The Seanchan are a vast and powerful empire whose civilisation developed far from the main continent of the series, on a continent across the Aryth Ocean; they are the people of a long-lost colony of Artur Hawkwing. Their culture enslaves female channelers, whom they consider too dangerous to be free: such women, called damane, are collared with a ter'angreal called an a'dam, through which women known as sul'dam control their power.

Lore & Background

As the Seanchan invade they use the a'dam on any Aes Sedai they can capture. In The Great Hunt Rand al'Thor defeats the High Lord Turak of the Seanchan force invading Falme in single combat, and Egwene al'Vere is collared as a damane at Falme before her friends free her. Later books follow the Seanchan occupation of Ebou Dar, Rand's battle against a forty-thousand-strong Seanchan army in The Path of Daggers, and Mat Cauthon's marriage to Tuon, heir to the Crystal Throne, in Knife of Dreams.
