Production
The eleventh season of The Walking Dead was first ordered in October 2019, with its official announcement as the final season coming on September 9, 2020. Angela Kang remained the showrunner. The original premiere date of October 2020 was scrapped in July of that year because production delays from the COVID-19 pandemic pushed things back. Way back in 2014, executive producer David Alpert had mentioned that the comic books provided enough material for seven more years, saying they had clear plans for seasons 11 and 12.
In 2018, AMC CEO Josh Sapan expanded on that, stating the network intended to keep the franchise alive for another decade with new films and TV series based on the original comics. When AMC confirmed the show would end with season 11 in September 2020, they also announced a 24-episode final season spread over two years and a spinoff featuring Daryl and Carol, set for 2023. That spinoff changed in April 2022 to focus solely on Daryl, with Melissa McBride leaving because filming was scheduled for Europe in mid-2022, making her participation logistically impossible.
The pandemic also halted pre-production in March 2020, delaying filming by three to four weeks. Actual filming for the final season started in February 2021 and wrapped in March 2022. The show switched from 16 mm film to digital for the six bonus episodes of season 10, a change driven by COVID-19 safety protocols that reduced physical contact points. Kang said post-production techniques would preserve the show's visual style. In March 2022, Norman Reedus got a concussion on set, which delayed the filming of the series finale.
Release
The eleventh and final season, known as "The Final Season Trilogy," began airing on AMC on August 22, 2021. Its 24 episodes were broadcast in three groups of eight, with the finale airing on November 20, 2022. AMC+ subscribers got an early start on August 15, 2021, and each episode except the last arrived on the streaming service a week before its television debut. In the UK and Ireland, the season launched on Disney+ via the Star hub on August 23, 2021. In Denmark, the first nine episodes became available on Disney+ through Star on February 21, 2022.
Reception
Critics generally liked the eleventh season of The Walking Dead. On Rotten Tomatoes, it earned an 80% score and a 7 out of 10 average rating from 237 reviews. The site's summary noted that while the feeling of an ending is undercut by the promise of more spin-offs, the season still provides a decent conclusion to a zombie saga that never had a clear stopping point. Paul Dailly of TV Fanatic rated the first two episodes 4.5 out of 5 stars, describing them as dark, high-stakes, and full of tense moments. Forbes writer Erik Kain gave a positive review to the two-part premiere, calling it a very impressive start to the season that left him eager for more. Kirsten Acuna of Insider offered a less enthusiastic take, saying the episodes were decent and satisfying but lacked the big-budget feel she expected.
