The Sentinel Swarm is the mass of Sentinels, the machines' killing machines, that hunts Zion's hovercraft in the real world. In The Matrix Reloaded an army of them tunnels towards Zion, set to reach it within 72 hours. Unlike Agents who operate within the digital simulation, Sentinels are hardware constructs designed to destroy Zion ships and eliminate free humans hiding outside the construct.

In The Matrix Revolutions a horde of Sentinels overwhelms Zion's shipyard, until the Mjolnir's EMP disables all those present, along with Zion's own remaining defenses.
Reader's Guide
Sentinels operate exclusively in the physical world, making them immune to manipulation by programs inside the simulation. They function as autonomous hunter-killer drones programmed with a single directive: locate and destroy free human resistance. Unlike Agents, they cannot be deleted from within the Matrix because their hardware exists outside the digital construct. They can be disabled by an electromagnetic pulse, though an EMP also knocks out the humans' own systems.
