Sentinels function exclusively within the physical reality, serving as the primary defense force for the Machine City and the enforcers against human rebels. Their most defining moment occurred when a horde overwhelmed Zion's shipyard, prompting Niobe and Morpheus to rush toward the city in the Mjolnir. To counter this threat, the crew discharged an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), which successfully disabled all Sentinels present at that specific location but also left Zion's remaining defenses offline. The machines are bound to the physical world; they do not exist within the Matrix, where threats like Agent Smith operate instead. Their role is strictly mechanical destruction in the real world, as seen when Neo used his newfound ability to see machine source code to shut them down while approaching Machine City.

In Their Own Story

Zion's shipyard was overwhelmed by a horde of Sentinels, forcing Niobe and Morpheus to rush toward the city in the Mjolnir to aid human defenses. After crashing through the half-open gate, the Mjolnir crew discharged its EMP, disabling all the Sentinels present but also neutralizing Zion's remaining defenses. The humans were forced to retreat and wait for the next attack, believing it would be their last stand. Later, as Neo piloted the Logos toward Machine City, he was besieged by machines. He utilized his newfound powers to shut several of them down before passing out from exhaustion. Eventually, after Neo offered peace in exchange for stopping Smith, the Deus Ex Machina agreed, and the Sentinels paused their attack on Zion and subsequently withdrew from the city.
