The alliance solidified when Avasarala informed James Holden that Earth had identified the Azure Dragon as the source of asteroid attacks. Bobbie Draper was sent along with the Rocinante crew as mission commander, successfully disabling the enemy ship and returning its crew as prisoners to Luna. With the immediate rock strike threat averted, Avasarala planned a major offensive to retake Ceres from the Free Navy, though Marco Inaros had already evacuated the station. When Fred Johnson convened a meeting of OPA factions that refused to join the Free Navy, Holden led the discussions after Johnson died of a stroke during high-G maneuvers. The heads of Earth, Mars, and the remaining OPA agreed to form a combined fleet. This consolidated force included Michio Pa's pirate fleet, which had betrayed Marco Inaros to redistribute supplies to Belt colonies. Although Medina Station surrendered to the Rocinante, it was left completely undefended from a counterattack by Marco Inaros, who ordered the rest of the Free Navy to travel under heavy burn to retake the station. Naomi Nagata analyzed data on disappearing colony ships and determined that when a certain threshold of mass passed through a gate followed closely by another ship, that second ship would vanish. In a desperate final attempt, the Coalition sent the right amount of mass through the Ring, timing it so Marco's ships disappeared upon entry, leaving him and the Free Navy to some unknown fate.
