Tamriel

The continent on which every Elder Scrolls game takes place.

Tamriel is the continent of the planet Nirn on which each game in The Elder Scrolls series is set. It comprises nine provinces, each dominated by a distinct race: Black Marsh (Argonians); Cyrodiil (Imperials); Elsweyr (Khajiit); Hammerfell (Redguards); High Rock (Bretons); Morrowind (Dunmer); Skyrim (Nords); Summerset Isle (Altmer); Valenwood (Bosmer).

Lore & Background

The exceptions to a Tamriel setting are An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire, set in a different dimension, and portions of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and all of its Shivering Isles expansion, which take place in Oblivion. The world was shaped by Ted Peterson, Vijay Lakshman and Julian LeFay, longtime fans of pen-and-paper role-playing games; Lakshman also came up with the name The Elder Scrolls, which came to mean Tamriel's mystical tomes of knowledge telling of its past, present and future.
