The Expanse is a science fiction television series based on the novel series by James S. A. Corey, the pen name of authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck.[1] It was widely praised for its scientific realism and technical accuracy.[2]

Making and release

Alcon Television Group optioned The Expanse for television on September 4, 2013.[1] Syfy announced a straight-to-series commitment for a 10-episode first season on April 11, 2014.[1] Principal photography on the first season began on October 29, 2014, in Toronto.[3] The pilot episode was screened at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2015.[4]

Naren Shankar, Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby were the showrunners, with Fergus and Ostby also writing the pilot episode.[5] In May 2018, Syfy decided not to continue the series beyond its third season.[6] Fans organized a campaign using the hashtag #SaveTheExpanse, which included a Change.org petition that accumulated more than 100,000 signatures, and they also crowdfunded an airplane to tow a banner over Amazon Studios.[6][7][8] Both individual seasons and a complete series collection of The Expanse are available on Blu-ray and DVD.[9]

An article from The Expanse Lives described how fans organized on the Unofficial Expanse Discord server and set up a GoFundMe for the airplane banner.[10] The same article noted that over 10,000 unique tweets with the #SaveTheExpanse hashtag were posted on one day, generating close to 70,000 interactions.[10]
