Alan Tudyk portrays the main character, an extraterrestrial who arrives on Earth after a crash landing, initially planning to wipe out humanity but later experiencing a moral conflict.[1]
Making and release
Syfy gave a pilot order to the adaptation on May 31, 2018, with Chris Sheridan as show creator and Universal Cable Productions, Dark Horse Entertainment, and Amblin Television developing.[2] Sheridan stated that his real inspiration came from a UFO "close encounter" he and his wife witnessed while honeymooning in the Bahamas twenty years ago.[3] Alan Tudyk was cast as the main character "Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle" on September 20, 2018.[4] The series premiered on January 27, 2021, in the United States on Syfy.[5]
The third season was originally ordered for 12 episodes but was reduced to 8 on November 15, 2022.[6] The fourth season premiered on June 6, 2025, simulcast on USA Network.[6] A series production order was given by Syfy on February 28, 2019; David Dobkin served as the pilot's director and an executive producer.[2] A second season renewal from Syfy came on March 17, 2021; its premiere occurred on January 26, 2022, and the season was divided into two blocks, each containing eight episodes.[2]
What the cited sources add
A Deadline article from May 31, 2018, describes Resident Alien as a "dark, twisted and comedic fish-out-of-water story".[7] The same article notes that the series asks the question, "Are human beings worth saving?".[7] Sheridan explained at a TCA panel that he changed the alien Harry to appear in human form most of the time, unlike the comics where he appears as an alien, because TV audiences attach to actors.[8] A Deadline article from March 17, 2021, reports that the series premiere drew 9.3 million viewers across all platforms and NBCUniversal networks.[9]
The same article states that Resident Alien was the most-watched new cable drama in the last year in total viewers.[9] TV Insider's July 24, 2025, article quotes Sheridan saying the finale "gives Resident Alien a very satisfying ending while also leaving the door cracked open for any future this world may have".[10]
