Nightflyers (TV series)
A horror sci-fi series based on George R. R. Martin's novella.
Last updated
Terrifying violent events occur on board, leading the crew to realize something else is on the ship with them.[1][2] Set in the year 2093, the Syfy series Nightflyers follows scientists traveling on the advanced ship Nightflyer to make first contact with alien life forms, and is described as a psychological thriller.[2][1] The television show adapts George R.R. Martin's 1980 novella, which is about a haunted spaceship.[3][2]
Making and release
Syfy began developing the series in 2016 after acquiring the rights to Martin's novella.[4] Production started in early 2018 on location in Limerick, Ireland, and at Troy Studios.[5] Daniel Cerone served as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Gene Klein, David Bartis, Doug Liman, and others.[5] The 2018 series incorporates elements from the 1987 film version of the same story.[4]
Because of his exclusive contract with HBO, George R.R. Martin had no direct creative involvement, though he received an executive producer credit.[4] The visual effects needed to integrate smoothly with the large, practical ship set that was constructed.[6] In February 2019, Syfy decided not to renew the series for a second season.[7]
What the cited sources add
McLevy wrote that showrunner Jeff Buhler "doesn’t quite know how to make it feel new again".[8][9] The A.V. Club review noted the series includes a psychic among its space travelers, going further into fantasy than the novella.[9] McLevy observed that the series races through its plot before it has a chance to register.[9] The VFX Voice article stated that the series was adapted by executive producer and showrunner Jeff Buhler in partnership with Universal Cable Productions and Syfy.[3]
Alex McLevy from The A.V. Club highlighted the show's "appealing visual style" given its budget constraints and specifically commended Maya Eshet's acting.[8][9]
