Extinct (2017 TV series)
Humans revived by aliens to restart civilization.
Last updated
BYUtv ordered ten episodes of the series, which first aired on October 1, 2017.[1] "Granite Flats" was BYUtv's first scripted television series, and "Extinct" became the network's second such program.[1]
Making and release
In an interview Card attributed the cancellation of the show to new management at BYUtv, stating that despite positive reception, "it didn't grow in their own garden, so they didn't want it."[2] The initial concept for the project was a film, but after BYUtv producer Adam Abel expressed interest in a television format, Card and Johnston adapted the scripts accordingly.[3] On October 1, 2017, BYUtv aired the initial two episodes without commercial interruptions.[4] Later that same evening, episodes three through eight became accessible for streaming on byutv.org and extinct.tv.[4]
When BYUtv broadcast a two-hour finale on November 19, 2017, episodes nine and ten were simultaneously made available online.[4] Only a single season of the series was produced before it was cancelled.[5]
What the cited sources add
The BYUtv cancellation announcement stated the network decided not to renew Extinct for a second season after careful consideration.[6] Collins also mentioned that the show includes cool VFX of alien spaceships, technology, and floating drones.[7] The series stars Chad Michael Collins, Victoria Atkin, Jaclyn Hales, Yorke Fryer, Jack Depew, Matthew Bellows, and Jake Stormoen.[6] Chad Michael Collins characterized the show as a "fun mish-mash of so many beloved genre series" that contains a great deal of action.[7]
