Krypton (TV series)
A prequel series about Superman's grandfather on Krypton.
Last updated
The series follows Seg-El, the grandfather of Superman, and is set about 200 years before Superman's birth on the planet Krypton.[1] David S. Goyer created the American science fiction TV series Krypton for the Syfy network.[1] The show's first airing was March 21, 2018, and Syfy ended it after two seasons in August 2019.[1]
Making and release
A spin-off based on Lobo was announced in June 2019 but was canceled two months later.[2] David S. Goyer began work on a prequel show called Krypton in October 2014.[3] Syfy developed the series, with Goyer producing and Ian Goldberg writing and serving as executive producer.[3] Lyta Zod was the first role filled, by Georgina Campbell, and Cameron Cuffe was later chosen to play Seg-El.[4][5]
Blake Ritson was chosen to portray Brainiac, a well-known adversary of Superman.[6][7] Colm McCarthy directed the pilot, which was shot in Serbia.[8][5] Ten episodes made up the first season, which debuted on March 21, 2018.[1][9] In August 2019, Syfy chose not to continue the series beyond its two seasons.[1][10]
What the cited sources add
A Deadline Hollywood article states that Lyta Zod is a member of Krypton’s military caste and the daughter of a general, Alura Zod.[5] The same article alleges that the creators wanted Adam Strange to be an LGBTQ+ character, but Johns allegedly downvoted that idea.[11] A Cinema Blend article, citing Deadline, characterizes Brainiac as a "parasitic, hyper-advanced alien android of immense intelligence".[7] A TVLine piece mentions that pilot production was scheduled to start in Montreal during the later part of 2016.[12]
