Leia Organa was born to Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo and Jedi Anakin Skywalker, who fell to the dark side to become Darth Vader. Following her mother's death at childbirth, Leia was adopted by Senator Bail Organa and Queen Breha of Alderaan. In Revenge of the Sith (2005), it is revealed that Obi-Wan Kenobi explained in an early Return of the Jedi draft that Luke's sister and their mother were sent to a distant star system for protection; the mother died, and the sister was adopted by the governor of Alderaan and his wife. In Return of the Jedi (1983), Leia learns she is Vader's daughter and Luke's twin. Later, in The Rise of Skywalker (2019), it is revealed that Luke trained her as a Jedi sometime after Return of the Jedi. Despite this training, she chose to lead the Resistance against the First Order rather than follow a traditional Jedi path.

In Their Own Story

In Star Wars (1977), Leia hid Death Star plans in R2-D2 before being captured by Darth Vader on her ship. Tortured and threatened with Alderaan's destruction, she gave up an abandoned base on Dantooine, only for Tarkin to destroy Alderaan anyway. Rescued by Luke, Han, and Chewbacca aboard the Millennium Falcon, she helped them find a weakness in the Death Star, leading to its destruction. In The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Leia commanded the Rebel base on Hoth during an Imperial assault, then fled with Han, Chewbacca, and C-3PO. After hiding in an asteroid field where they shared a kiss, they sought repairs from Lando Calrissian in Cloud City. Betrayed by Lando to Vader, Leia confessed her love for Han just before he was frozen in carbonite. Sensing Luke's distress via the Force, she ordered Chewbacca to turn back and rescue him. In Return of the Jedi (1983), Leia infiltrated Jabba's palace disguised as Ubese bounty hunter Boushh. After freeing Han from carbonite, both were recaptured; Leia was chained in a metal bikini before killing Jabba by strangling him with her chain. Later on Endor, Luke revealed he was her twin brother.

Fisher later observed that Return of the Jedi made Leia 'more feminine' but also had her take off her clothes as part of a boys' fantasy.
