Palpatine's rise began as a Senator from Naboo who masterminded the Clone Wars to transform the Galactic Republic into the Empire. He destroyed the Jedi Order and manipulated Anakin Skywalker into becoming his apprentice, Darth Vader. His story was inspired by real-world dictators like Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Adolf Hitler, reflecting how democracies are given away rather than overthrown. In The Rise of Skywalker (2019), a resurrected Palpatine was revealed as the grandfather of Rey and the creator of Snoke to lead the First Order against the New Republic. He also manipulated Ben Solo into becoming Kylo Ren. His consolidation of power mirrored that of Augustus, using military control and false crises to pressure the Senate into granting extraordinary powers.

In Their Own Story

In Return of the Jedi, Palpatine arrived at the Death Star greeted by stormtroopers in a scene Lucas designed to resemble May Day parades in Russia. Screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan noted that while Vader had dignity, the Emperor held all power and intimidated his apprentice. Director Irvin Kershner instructed voice actor Clive Revill to keep the performance restrained, adhering to 'less is more,' as the character spoke little but carried immense weight. For The Empire Strikes Back Special Edition (2004), Ian McDiarmid replaced Marjorie Eaton's original portrayal and revised dialogue to ensure continuity with the prequels. In Attack of the Clones, McDiarmid portrayed Palpatine shedding 'crocodile tears' that were real for the character—a pure exercise of manipulation—while appearing moved during Padmé Amidala's assassination attempt.
