C-3PO, or See-Threepio, is a humanoid protocol droid fluent in over six million forms of communication, designed to assist with etiquette and translation. Created by concept artist Ralph McQuarrie based on the robot from Fritz Lang's Metropolis (1927), he first appeared in the 1976 novelization of Star Wars before debuting in the 1977 film. Portrayed physically and vocally by Anthony Daniels across all nine films of the Skywalker Saga, plus Rogue One, C-3PO serves as the neurotic counterpoint to R2-D2's stoicism. George Lucas originally envisioned him with a "sleazy New York second-hand car dealer" voice, but Daniels' performance shifted the character into a neurotic English butler archetype. This dynamic duo was explicitly designed by Lucas to resemble the comedy team Laurel and Hardy.

C-3PO's story begins on Tatooine, where nine-year-old slave Anakin Skywalker built him from spare parts. He met his future companion R2-D2 while helping Anakin prepare for the Boonta Eve Classic podracer race. After Anakin left with Qui-Gon Jinn, 3PO remained behind, assured he would not be sold by Shmi Skywalker. Ten years later, during Attack of the Clones, he reunited with Anakin and Padmé Amidala on Tatooine before accompanying them to Geonosis.

There, his head was swapped with a battle droid's, causing him to reluctantly fight in the arena before being restored. By Revenge of the Sith, he witnessed Anakin's fall to Darth Vader and helped transport the pregnant Padmé to safety. Following her death at Polis Massa, Captain Raymus Antilles ordered 3PO's memory erased to protect Luke and Leia, severing his connection to his creator. In The Force Awakens, his fluency expanded to seven million forms of communication, and he sported a distinctive red left arm.
