In the earliest screenplay drafts, Solo was conceived as a green-skinned Ureallian alien with enormous gills and no nose, a member of the "Jedi Bendu" acquainted with General Skywalker. George Lucas later reimagined him as a bearded, flamboyant pirate before settling on a human character to better develop his relationships with others, making Chewbacca his alien sidekick instead. By the third draft, Solo had become a "tough James Dean style starpilot," with Humphrey Bogart serving as a key reference point for the role. During the development of The Empire Strikes Back, Lucas described Solo as "coming to grips with accepting responsibility." Early concepts included him meeting a business leader who acted like a stepfather; in the final film, he reunites with Lando Calrissian instead. While initial drafts of Revenge of the Sith featured a ten-year-old Solo helping Yoda locate General Grievous and raised by Chewbacca on Kashyyyk, Lucas removed the character from that story. For The Force Awakens, director J.J. Abrams shifted the plot so Solo would die at his son's hands to move the narrative forward, influencing his appearance with Rooster Cogburn from True Grit (2010).

Solo first appears in Star Wars (1977) alongside Chewbacca on the Millennium Falcon. Before departing Tatooine, he is cornered by the bounty hunter Greedo; Solo shoots and kills him before escaping Imperial stormtroopers. After discovering Alderaan's destruction, they rescue Princess Leia from the Death Star. Although initially refusing to aid the Rebels after collecting his reward, Solo unexpectedly returns during the Battle of Yavin, saving Luke Skywalker and allowing the Death Star's destruction. In The Empire Strikes Back (1980), he rescues Luke on Hoth, shares a kiss with Leia in an asteroid field, and is betrayed by Lando Calrissian in Cloud City. Darth Vader freezes him in carbonite for delivery to Jabba the Hutt, during which Leia confesses her love. In Return of the Jedi (1983), a year later, Leia liberates Solo from Jabba's palace on Tatooine. After escaping execution by a Sarlacc with Luke and Chewbacca, Solo serves as a general leading a strike team to disable the shield on Endor, helping destroy the second Death Star. In The Force Awakens (2015), set thirty years later, he has returned to smuggling. He reunites with Leia and learns their son Ben is now Kylo Ren. Solo confronts his son on Starkiller Base; after a brief reconciliation, Kylo kills him.
