Background
Starfleet was not part of the series from the start. Early in the first season, Captain Kirk said the Enterprise's authority came from the United Earth Space Probe Agency.
Gene L. Coon joined the writing staff in August 1966, and William Shatner credits him with introducing Starfleet, Starfleet Command and the United Federation of Planets to the show.
