Regula I is a space station where the Genesis Device is being developed by Dr. Carol Marcus, Kirk's former lover, and their son, David. The station is attacked by Khan Noonien Singh, who uses mind-controlled officers Chekov and Terrell to capture the station. When Kirk, McCoy, and Saavik beam to the station, they find the crew slaughtered. They discover Carol and David hiding the Genesis Device deep inside a nearby planetoid. Khan transports the Genesis Device aboard the Reliant, intending to maroon Kirk on the planetoid.

The airlock groaned as it cycled open, revealing corridors where polished Starfleet metal met rough-hewn asteroid rock. Dr. Marcus adjusted her tricorder; its soft blue light cut through the dimness, reflecting off her exhausted face. Somewhere deep in the labyrinth of tunnels and consoles, a klaxon shattered the silence—a sound forbidden under total blackout protocols. She tightened her grip on the data pad holding the Genesis schematics. "They found us," she whispered, the station’s hum suddenly sounding like a countdown. Once a beacon for lifeless worlds, Regula I had become a cage.
