Lore & Background

The game takes place during an expedition from the Eustella Republic into the former territory of the ancient Aladissian Empire, which thrived on alchemy but fell due to an unknown cataclysm centuries ago, making alchemy taboo. The expedition leader, Erhard Boleman, enlists Yumia Liessfeldt, a practitioner of the forbidden art, accompanied by an autonomous assistant named Flammi created by her late mother. Two young expedition members, Viktor von Duerer and his sister Isla, initially wary of Yumia, eventually warm to her. After an encounter with a dragon-like mutant named Vesper, Viktor and Isla reveal Vesper caused a mana explosion that destroyed their city, and Yumia confesses her mother used alchemy to sacrifice herself to save survivors.

Reader's Guide

Atelier Yumia is significant as the fastest-selling game in the franchise, with over 300,000 copies sold in its first week. It received generally favorable reviews on all platforms according to Metacritic, and OpenCritic reported 77% of critics recommended it. In Japan, Famitsu gave it a score of 34 out of 40. The game was produced by Junzo Hosoi, head of Gust, and its story elements were based on those of Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key, with the development team reinterpreting complex story parts and reconstructing the battle system. Antagonists were introduced after complaints about a lack of villains in Ryza 3. A sequel, Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories, is set for release in 2027.
