Octopus chierchiae, also called the lesser Pacific striped octopus or pygmy zebra octopus, is a small marine cephalopod in the family Octopodidae and genus *Octopus*. It lives in the eastern tropical Pacific, mainly off the coasts of Panama and Costa Rica, in shallow benthic habitats such as rubble, rocky crevices, and sandy bottoms, from the intertidal zone down to about 100 meters. Unlike most octopuses, which reproduce only once (semelparous), this species can breed multiple times (iteroparous). Its dark-and-light stripe patterns are unique to each individual and stay the same throughout its life, making it a useful model organism for lab research. Although it is increasingly studied in captivity, little is known about its wild population, and the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient.

**Description** Juveniles hatch at about 3.5 mm mantle length and usually lack the species’ striped pattern, which becomes visible under magnification around five days after hatching. Under good conditions, they reach adult size in roughly 250–300 days. Adults have a mantle length of about 20 mm—about the size of a grape—and show bold, individually distinct stripes on the mantle and arms that remain stable for life. The largest recorded mantle length is about 25 mm. Sexually mature males are identified by a modified third right arm (hectocotylus) that lacks suckers and is used to transfer spermatophores; males may also shake their arm tips rapidly in a behavior called tasseling. Sexual maturity generally occurs around six months of age. Females can lay multiple clutches of eggs—up to twelve in their reproductive life—with intervals of roughly 30 to 90 days between clutches.

**Distribution and habitat** This octopus is native to the eastern tropical Pacific, specifically the central Pacific coast of the Americas, notably Panama and Costa Rica. Its natural habitat includes shallow, benthic coastal areas like intertidal and shallow subtidal zones with rocks, shells, rubble, and crevices for hiding. Because field observations are scarce, the full range and population density in the wild remain unknown.

**Behavior and ecology** In both the wild and captivity, *O. chierchiae* acts as a typical benthic predator and crevice-dweller, feeding on small crustaceans and other invertebrates. It uses shells, rubble, and rock crevices for shelter.
