New Mexico
West Texas on screen, Albuquerque behind the camera.
New Mexico is where the AMC series Preacher was first filmed. Principal photography for the pilot began on May 13, 2015, in Albuquerque, and the series lists Albuquerque as a filming location alongside New Orleans and Australia.
Lore & Background
The producers chose Albuquerque because Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul had been made there and because of the state's filming incentives, which include a 30% tax credit for television production. Developer Sam Catlin at first doubted the choice, worried that the show would look too much like those series; the story itself begins in west Texas. Cinematographer John Grillo described Albuquerque's light as browns, yellows and golden sunlight and worked it into the look of the show.
