Genesis
The child of an angel and a demon, with a power that may rival God's.
Genesis is the supernatural entity that possesses Jesse Custer in Preacher. It is the offspring of an angel and a demon, and its power may rival that of God. Bonded to Jesse, it gives him the Word of God, the ability to command anyone who hears and understands him.
Lore & Background
Genesis looks like a comet with the face of a crying infant and holds all of the memories and powers of Heaven and Hell. It has no individual will of its own. God left Heaven right after its birth, and the Seraphi angels were left in command. Genesis later escaped and bonded with Jesse Custer, a preacher in the small Texas town of Annville, and the Adelphi angels appointed the Saint of Killers to retrieve it. The Seraphi angel who fathered Genesis fell to Earth in 1994 and was captured by the Grail.
Reader's Guide
In the final arc of the comics, Jesse has to release Genesis in order to set God up for the Saint of Killers, and the only way to release it is to die. In the AMC television series, Genesis is shown to have merged with and killed other religious leaders before it reaches Jesse Custer.
