Heaven
The kingdom God walked out of.
Heaven in Preacher is God's kingdom. God leaves it the moment Genesis is born, and the Seraphi angels are left in command. Genesis is confined there until it escapes to Earth and finds Jesse Custer.
Lore & Background
With things falling apart, a quorum of angels decides to send the Saint of Killers to Earth to recapture Genesis at any cost. The Saint later learns that God, the only power able to command him, is gone from Heaven. The Saint is able to enter and leave Heaven at will.
Reader's Guide
At the end of the comics the whole Heavenly host is arrayed against the Saint when he enters Heaven, and he shoots down every angel in his way. God returns once Genesis is released, and the Saint shoots Him dead and takes His throne. In the AMC series the angels Fiore and DeBlanc are sent from Heaven to retrieve Genesis, and Jesse uses a phone to Heaven to look for God.
Origins and Narrative Core
The story centers on Jesse Custer, a disillusioned preacher from the small Texas town of Annville, whose life is irrevocably altered when he becomes accidentally bonded with Genesis. This supernatural entity is the unnatural offspring of an angel and a demon, possessing no individual will but containing the combined essence of pure good and evil. This union grants Jesse potential power rivaling God Himself, transforming him into perhaps the most powerful being in existence.
Driven by a rigid moral compass, Custer embarks on a cross-country quest to literally locate God, who abandoned Heaven immediately after Genesis's birth. Along his journey, he discovers his ability to command absolute obedience from anyone who hears and comprehends his words. He is not alone in this odyssey; he is joined by his former girlfriend, Tulip O'Hare, and Cassidy, a hard-drinking Irish vampire. Together, they navigate a landscape filled with both sacred and profane adversaries, ranging from the invincible Saint of Killers to Jesse's own dysfunctional family.
