God

The Creator who abandoned Heaven.

In the world of Preacher, God is not a benevolent deity but an absentee creator. God abandoned Heaven the moment Genesis was born. This abandonment is the central driving force of the series: Jesse Custer, a disillusioned Texas preacher, journeys across America to literally find God. It is known that God is the entity to whom The Saint of Killers answers, referred to as 'He Who Sits On The Throne.'

Lore & Background

God left Heaven and fled to Earth after Genesis was born, and was not heard from again until Genesis fused with Jesse Custer. Genesis is the supernatural creature that possesses Jesse Custer, born from the unauthorized coupling of an angel and a demon. Its power, composed of both pure goodness and pure evil, might rival that of God Himself. The Saint of Killers, an invincible Angel of Death, answers only to 'He Who Sits On The Throne,' which is a title for God. Jesse Custer's primary quest is to find God, who is absent from Heaven.

Reader's Guide

God's departure from Heaven is the starting point of Jesse Custer's quest. This event is the catalyst for the entire plot. God's key relationship is with Jesse Custer, who is on a quest to find Him. At the end of the comics God returns to Heaven, where the Saint of Killers has slain the Heavenly Host and shoots Him dead.

Origins and Premise

The narrative centers on Jesse Custer, a disillusioned preacher from the small Texas town of Annville, whose life is irrevocably altered by a supernatural accident. He becomes bound to Genesis, a unique entity born from the unauthorized union of an angel and a demon. This creature possesses no individual will but embodies both pure goodness and pure evil, granting Custer potential power rivaling God Himself. Driven by a rigid moral compass, Custer embarks on a cross-country journey across the United States with one specific goal: to literally find God, who abandoned Heaven immediately after Genesis's birth.

Alongside his old flame Tulip O'Hare and Cassidy, a hard-drinking Irish vampire, Custer discovers he can command absolute obedience from anyone who hears and understands his words. Their quest is fraught with danger as they navigate a world filled with both sacred and profane obstacles.

Antagonists and Adversaries

The trio faces a diverse array of formidable enemies ranging from the mythological to the grotesque. A primary threat is The Saint of Killers, an invincible Angel of Death who answers only to 'He Who Sits On The Throne' and possesses perfect aim. They also encounter Arseface, a disfigured former suicide attempt survivor turned rock star, and the serial killer known as the Reaver-Cleaver. Perhaps most insidious is The Grail, a secret organization that controls world governments while protecting Jesus's bloodline. Their primary enforcer, Herr Starr, is a megalomaniac with a penchant for prostitutes who seeks to exploit Custer's powers for his own ends. Beyond these external forces, Jesse must also contend with his own redneck family, including his nasty Cajun grandmother and her bodyguard Jody, as well as the zoophilic T.C.
