Rugby World Cup 2015 was universally panned by critics, who noted few improvements over HB Studios' similarly-criticized Rugby 15 and believed the game was rushed to release in time for the tournament. IGN gave the game a 1.5 out of 10, citing major bugs, poorly implemented AI, pre-determined tackle outcomes, and a frustrating ruck system that emphasized speediness over control. The reviewer concluded the game was essentially a rebranded version of Rugby 15. A feature using statistical data to simulate matches sometimes produced implausible results, such as South Africa crushing Japan in every simulation—ironically, Japan upset South Africa in the actual tournament. Gamesradar was somewhat more positive, noting improvements like television-styled instant replays and gameplay that rewarded running straight rather than glitching past defences. However, the game was otherwise criticized for only minor improvements, with scrums reduced to simple 'hook' and 'push' commands. Half the teams, including tournament host England, were unlicensed and composed of fictional players, and no actual tournament venues were featured. Giving the game 2 out of 5 stars, Gamesradar considered the improvements a fig leaf barely covering the game's otherwise gruesome nudity.
