Gameplay
In Fieldrunners, turrets can be placed anywhere on the map, and enemies will navigate around them, forcing the player to create a path. Blocking the path is not possible. The game offers three gameplay modes: Classic, Extended, and Endless. Classic and Extended modes limit the player to 100 rounds of defense. Classic mode allows building only the original four towers: Gatling, Goo, Missile, and Tesla, with exceptions on Skyway (Laser replaces Tesla) and Frostbite (Ice replaces Goo). Extended mode adds Flame Tower and Mortar Tower, except on Skyway where Tesla replaces Mortar. Endless mode allows indefinite defense. Players can choose Easy, Medium, or Hard difficulty. Maps were added through updates. The initial release included only Grasslands, an open field where enemies enter from the left and exit to the right. Later maps include Crossroads, Drylands, Skyway, Frostbite, Crystal Caves, MudSlide, and LavaFlow, each with unique entry points and features such as obstacles or train routes.
Reception
Fieldrunners received generally positive reviews. The PSP version scored 81% on Metacritic. IGN rated the game eight out of ten and highly recommended it. The iPhone version was called the best tower defense game on iPhone at the time by Pocket Gamer, praising its controls and visuals. The iPad HD version also received positive reviews.
