The Heroes of Olympus: The Lost Hero

A demigod with no memory and his two friends must rescue Hera from the forces of Gaea.

The Lost Hero doesn't just open a door; it shatters the glass wall separating Percy Jackson's world from an entirely new mythological hemisphere. It is the first book of the series to use third-person narration, switching between the points of view of Jason Grace, Piper McLean and Leo Valdez. After a storm spirit attacks their school field trip to the Grand Canyon, the three are taken to Camp Half-Blood, setting the stage for the Prophecy of Seven.

Lore & Background

Beneath the surface of this amnesiac adventure lies a ticking clock: Gaea, the Earth Mother herself, is stirring from a millennia-long slumber. To stop her, Hera engineers a high-stakes cosmic swap, tearing heroes from their roots and dumping them into foreign soil to force an uneasy alliance. Jason Grace, a son of Jupiter and a hero of the Roman camp, Camp Jupiter, wakes with no memory on a school bus; Piper McLean and Leo Valdez are his apparent girlfriend and best friend. Camp Half-Blood and Camp Jupiter have had a ruthless rivalry, and whenever they come into contact, things never end well.

Reader's Guide

The journey begins when Jason Grace awakens on a Wilderness School bus with no memory, next to Piper and Leo, on a field trip led by Coach Gleeson Hedge. After the storm spirit's attack, Annabeth Chase arrives in a flying chariot looking for the missing Percy Jackson and takes them to Camp Half-Blood. At camp, Leo is revealed as a son of Hephaestus who can conjure fire, Piper as a daughter of Aphrodite with the gift of charmspeak, and Jason as a son of Zeus.

Given a quest to rescue Hera, the trio learns that their enemies work for Gaea; they defeat the giant Enceladus at Mount Diablo and rescue Piper's father. With the Hunters of Artemis, the trio travels to the Wolf House, defeats the forces of Gaea and saves Hera; Jason then realizes that Hera switched him with Percy Jackson, who is now at the Roman camp. With Gaea waking and the prophecy demanding seven heroes, they realize the only way forward is to bridge the rift between their worlds.
