ViewSonic

Last updated

The company launched its ViewSonic monitor line in 1990 and later renamed itself after that brand.[1][2] In 1987, James Chu established Keypoint Technology Corporation in California.[1][2]

Key facts and history

James Chu started the company after being stranded in the U.S. by a Taiwanese manufacturer, according to a GoldSea account.[3] By October 1987, Chu's salesmanship had turned his employer into a huge success.[3] The company filed for an IPO in 2007 to raise up to $143.8 million, but withdrew in 2008 citing unattractive market terms.[4] By 2019, over 5,500 U.S. elementary and junior high schools had installed ViewBoards.[5]

The company's headquarters are in Brea, California, with a research center in New Taipei City, Taiwan.[6] ViewSonic purchased the branded business of Nokia Display Products during the year 2000.[7]

What the cited sources add

A GoldSea article notes that before 2000, Chu predicted ViewSonic would surpass NEC in total U.S. sales.[3] The company's own timeline states it launched its first LCD monitor in 1997 and entered the projector market in 1999.[2] A 2019 press release confirms ViewSonic's myViewBoard Classroom platform became Google for Education certified.[8] The same release quotes President Bonny Cheng on the company's alignment with Google's education ecosystem.[8]

A 2020 press release states ViewSonic became a Microsoft Education partner, integrating myViewBoard with Microsoft tools.[9] That release quotes CTO Craig Scott on myViewBoard for Windows creating a secure, cloud-integrated whiteboard experience.[9]
