Pimax

Last updated

The Pimax 4K headset has a combined resolution of 3840×2160 running at 60 Hz.[1] In 2017, Pimax ran a Kickstarter campaign for the Pimax 8K headset, raising approximately $4.2 million.[2] Due to cable bandwidth limits, the headset's input is limited to 2560×1440 per display, which is then upscaled.[3] The Pimax Vision 8K X was selected as Top Tech of CES: AR/VR by Digital Trends on 8 January 2020.[2]

According to the manufacturer, the Pimax 8K provides a 200-degree field of view and incorporates two separate 4K displays.[3] A $15 million series A funding round was completed by Pimax, as announced on 19 December 2017.[2] Series B financing worth $20 million was received by Pimax on 18 October 2020.[2]

What the cited sources add

An Engadget journalist reported that the Pimax 8K uses CLPL panels instead of OLED, which Pimax claims has eliminated ghosting and improved brightness.[4] The same journalist described the Pimax 8K as the most immersive VR gameplay they had ever experienced.[4] Pimax confirmed to Engadget that CLPL uses an RGB sub-pixel arrangement, which is denser than the PenTile arrangement used on the Vive and Rift.[4] The Crystal includes headset-tracked controllers and inside-out tracking out of the box at that price point.[5]
