Japanese Strategic Self Defense Force
Japan's post-Second Impact military: first to fight the Angels, later sent against NERV.
The Japanese Strategic Self Defense Force (JSSDF) is a fictional stand-in for the real Japan Self-Defense Forces in Neon Genesis Evangelion and The End of Evangelion. Formed after Second Impact, it is Japan's first line of defence and, in Tokyo-3, engages the Angels with tanks, warships, aircraft and N² mines before the Evangelions can be sent out.

Background
It was created after Second Impact, when tensions with China over the Nansha (Spratly) Islands led to the removal of Article 9 of Japan's constitution; unlike the old Self-Defense Forces it is a true military. It works as part of the new United Nations forces, so its vehicles often carry UN markings. Against Sachiel it attacked with everything from VTOL gunships to tanks and finally an N² mine, which only halted the Angel, and command passed to NERV; against Israfel another N² mine bought NERV six days. In The End of Evangelion SEELE uses its hold over the Japanese government to send the JSSDF against NERV Headquarters: its troops kill NERV staff, seal Unit-01 in Bakelite and try to recapture the Magi, Misato dies at their hands, and Asuka in Unit-02 destroys much of their force before Third Impact turns the remaining soldiers to LCL.
