Background
Humans come from Lilith: when she reached Earth after Adam, the LCL she spread, which is her own blood, gave rise to the first single-celled life and eventually to Homo sapiens, making Lilith humanity's direct progenitor. Humanity received the Fruit of Knowledge, while Adam's children, the Angels, received the Fruit of Life, the S² Engine behind their power and regeneration, so humans and Angels are incompatible. Where Adam's children are split into separate Angels, the billions of individual humans count as a single Angel, described as a colony of flawed and separate beings. In the Rebuild film Evangelion 3.0 Kaworu speaks of a death instinct built into the Lilin and calls Gendo the King of Lilin. The word comes from Mesopotamian lore, where the lilin are succubi.
