Background
During battles with the Angels, Maya, Aoba and Hyuga run the main control stations on the Command Center's bridge, monitoring the Evas and their pilots. She is cheerful and optimistic but sensitive, hiding her eyes or retching at the bloodier Eva battles. When the Japanese Strategic Self-Defense Force storms NERV in The End of Evangelion, she refuses to fire on the soldiers, saying she cannot kill another person. Unlike the 14-year-old pilots, she was already a child at the time of Second Impact, and she admires Tokyo-3 as a city where science reigns supreme.
