Night Vision Goggles
See the unseen, but count every bar on the battery.
Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) are a treasured piece of pre-war tech in the Metro 2033 series, used by the player character Artyom to navigate the lightless tunnels of the Moscow Metro and the irradiated surface. They amplify the faintest ambient light—a distant glow-worm, a crack in the ceiling—into a ghostly green landscape, granting limited visibility in absolute darkness. But this gift comes at a cost: a steady, hungry drain on batteries, which are more precious than bullets in the Metro.

Lore & Background
In the Metro, where electricity is a rumor and the tunnels are often pitch black, Night Vision Goggles are a prized tool for stalkers and rangers who must venture into unlit areas or the surface. They are not standard issue for most Metro dwellers, as batteries are a precious commodity, and the goggles themselves are rare relics from before the war. The technology is based on Soviet military surplus—often scavenged from old bunkers or military outposts, their lenses cracked, their casings rusted—and can be found in working condition only by the lucky or the well-connected.
Artyom acquires his first pair during his journey, typically from a friendly station or a fallen comrade. The goggles emit a faint green glow when active, and their use is essential for stealthy passage through mutant-infested tunnels, as they allow the player to see without using a flashlight that might attract attention. However, the constant drain on batteries means the player must manage their use carefully, often switching them off to conserve power in brighter areas or when not needed.
Note that in the original Metro 2033, wearing a gas mask prevents the use of night vision goggles—you must remove the mask to toggle NVGs.
Reader's Guide
Night Vision Goggles are a toggleable item that replaces the standard flashlight when equipped. They provide a wide, green-tinted view of the environment, revealing details in darkness that would otherwise be invisible. This is invaluable for navigating unlit tunnels, spotting distant threats, or reading signs and maps in low light. Their primary drawback is battery consumption.
The goggles drain power continuously while active, and batteries are a finite resource. Players must balance the need for vision against the risk of being left in the dark later. The goggles also prevent the use of a gas mask, so they are best suited for indoor areas or the surface when the air is breathable. In combat, the goggles allow for precise aiming in darkness, but the green glow can wash out subtle color cues—like the faint red of a distant mutant's eyes or the rust on a trap—making it harder to spot threats that rely on color contrast.
Did You Know?
- The Night Vision Goggles in Metro 2033 are based on real Soviet NVG designs, such as the PNV-57E, which were used by tank crews and often had a distinctive, bulky housing.
- Using the goggles drains the battery even when the player is standing still, so it's best to turn them off when not moving—or risk hearing that dreaded low-battery click in the middle of a pack of nosalises.
- Battery drain rate is faster on higher difficulty settings (e.g., Ranger Hardcore) in the original Metro 2033, not consistent across all settings—so expect your batteries to die quicker when the stakes are highest.
