Background
The Spectres were originally founded to keep the krogan in check, and are modelled on the salarians' covert Special Tasks Group. When the Council ordered them to strike at the krogan, the krogan retaliated, starting the Krogan Rebellions.
Other Spectres in the series include the salarian Jondum Bau, who meets Shepard in Mass Effect 3, and an asari Spectre secretly working for the Shadow Broker in Lair of the Shadow Broker.
In the first Mass Effect, Shepard is a candidate to become the first human Spectre and works under the turian Spectre Nihlus Kryik on Eden Prime. The rogue Spectre Saren Arterius is the game's antagonist; once his treason is proven, the Council revokes his status and makes Shepard the first human Spectre. Saren had earlier undermined David Anderson's bid to become a Spectre.
