Lore & Background

In the MCU, Thanos's drive stems from his observation on Titan approximately 1,000 years ago, where he proposed killing half the population to prevent extinction, only to be ostracized when his prediction came true. He subsequently conquered worlds, forging alliances with the Other and Ronan the Accuser while adopting children like Gamora and Nebula. To achieve his goal of universal balance, he targeted the six Infinity Stones: obtaining the Mind Stone via a scepter in 2012 and the Power Stone from Xandar in 2014 after Ronan's betrayal. He forced Dwarves on Nidavellir to forge the Infinity Gauntlet by 2015. His campaign included decimating Xandar, killing half of Asgardian refugees, obtaining the Space Stone from Loki, and traveling to Knowhere for the Reality Stone. On Vormir, he sacrificed Gamora for the Soul Stone after learning its requirement.

In Their Own Story

In 2018, Thanos assembled all six stones on Titan and Earth. After defeating the Avengers in Wakanda and reversing Wanda Maximoff's destruction of the Mind Stone using the Time Stone, he completed his collection. Despite Thor impaling him with Stormbreaker, Thanos snapped his fingers, disintegrating half of all life in an event known as the Decimation. He retreated to a Garden where he destroyed the stones twenty-three days later before being killed by Thor. Five years later, in 2023, an alternate version from 2014 traveled through time via Nebula's cybernetic link. This version arrived at the Avengers Compound with his army, intending to destroy all life and repopulate it so survivors would be grateful. He defeated Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Thor until Stark tricked him into obtaining a Nano Gauntlet, snapping Thanos and his army to dust.
