Mysterio
Quentin Beck, the special-effects artist turned master of illusion.
Mysterio is the alias used by several supervillains in Marvel Comics, introduced by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in The Amazing Spider-Man #13 (June 1964). The most well-known version is Quentin Beck, a former special-effects artist, illusionist, and actor who becomes a criminal. Mysterio is a recurring enemy of Spider-Man and a founding member of the Sinister Six, also clashing with heroes like Daredevil. In the alternate reality of Wolverine: Old Man Logan, a version of Mysterio tricks an elderly Wolverine into killing the X-Men, making him that character's archenemy. Another alternate Mysterio appears in Spider-Man: Fake Red as a Venom-wielding villain.
Later incarnations include Daniel Berkhart, a stuntman hired by J. Jonah Jameson to impersonate Mysterio's ghost before taking on the role permanently; Francis Klum, a mutant teleporter who blames Spider-Man for his lost leg; and Mysterion, a black man who buys the identity from Roderick Kingsley and fights the Superior Spider-Man and Squirrel Girl.
In adaptations, Mary Kate Wiles voiced a composite version named Frances Beck in the 2016 Ultimate Spider-Man series, and Jake Gyllenhaal portrayed Mysterio in the 2019 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Mysterio debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #13 (June 1964). A later retcon revealed that aliens seen in The Amazing Spider-Man #2 were actually Mysterio and his men in disguise, hired by the Tinkerer to pose as extraterrestrials and gather military and industrial secrets. Like the Kingpin, Mysterio has also been a major Daredevil villain, notably in the "Guardian Devil" storyline, where he nearly pushes Daredevil to his breaking point.
Quentin Beck is a special-effects master and stuntman for a Hollywood studio who dreams of film stardom but sees his career as a dead end. After his acting attempts fail, he uses his illusion skills for crime. In his first battle with Spider-Man, he frames the hero for robbing the Midtown Museum, uses gas to block Spider-Man's spider-sense, and dissolves his webbing with a chemical. Spider-Man tricks Mysterio into confessing on tape, leading to his arrest. Mysterio blames Spider-Man for ruining his career.
He later joins the Sinister Six for revenge. Doctor Octopus devises a plan where each member receives a card with the next battle's location, chosen to suit their talents. Spider-Man must defeat them in sequence. When Spider-Man faces Mysterio, the third opponent, he is attacked by robot replicas of the X-Men controlled by Mysterio. After defeating the robots and Mysterio, Spider-Man moves on to fight the Sandman.
Mysterio later adopts the alias Dr. Ludwig Rinehart, a psychiatrist, using hypnosis and technology to try to drive Spider-Man insane. He nearly convinces Spider-Man to unmask, but J. Jonah Jameson's sudden arrival foils the plan. Spider-Man unmasks Mysterio. He then briefly partners with the Wizard to kill Spider-Man and the Human Torch on a movie set, but both are defeated. He threatens to destroy a city on live TV and uses post-hypnotic suggestion to make Spider-Man believe he is six inches tall in a miniature funfair, but Spider-Man sees through it and captures him.
While Beck is in prison, his cellmate Daniel Berkhart briefly becomes Mysterio on his behalf. After release, Beck uses the Rinehart identity to manipulate Aunt May into revealing a hidden fortune in her house, using fake alien disguises to frighten her. The money, however, had been eaten by silverfish. In another scheme, Mysterio tricks Spider-Man into thinking he caused a bystander's death, then tries to scare tenants out of an apartment complex for a real estate scam, only to be humiliated by the Power Pack. He is recruited by Doctor Octopus for the second Sinister Six and battles Spider-Man again. Other encounters include faking Aunt May's death and making deals with demons from Limbo, but Mysterio is consistently defeated by Spider-Man.

Subsequent schemes
Doctor Octopus and Mysterio coordinated Octobots that infiltrated the Apogee 1 Space Station, turning crew members into zombie-like controllers. After the station was destroyed, Octopus began his master plan. During the "Ends of the Earth" storyline, Mysterio initially aided Octopus but later helped Spider-Man, Silver Sable, and the Black Widow after realizing Octopus would not honor his deal. Mysterio led them to a Mayan temple where Octopus's base was located, disabled the Octobots controlling the Avengers, lent his vehicle, and disappeared.
In the Spider-Men storyline, Mysterio crossed to the Ultimate Marvel Universe multiple times. He used surveillance to stay ahead of police, released a fear hallucinogen to rob a bank, and severely wounded the Ultimate Spider-Man before a vigilante rescued him. Mysterio later designed a Spider-Slayer from Spider-Man's blood, but the hero defeated it. After his hideout was discovered, Mysterio blew it up.
Retirement and return to villainy
After defeats by Deadpool and others, Quentin Beck retired to Las Vegas. His daughter Misty Beck persuaded him to become Mysterio again. She involved him in a ritual granting power if she sacrificed something she loved, but when she tried to kill Beck, Scarlet Spider's intervention caused Beck to accidentally stab her. Beck gained power from Cyttorak by placing his hand on the altar with Misty's blood.
He attacked the Scarlet Spider, who defeated him by cutting off that hand. Mysterio later created an illusion of an alien invasion that lured superhero teams, but Spider-Man stopped him. In court, Janice Lincoln appeared as his lawyer. In "Dead Man Logan," Miss Sinister coaxed Beck into becoming Mysterio again, promising safety from Old Man Logan.
Mysterio sided with Neo-Hydra but learned they would dispose of him. He then led Logan to their base, used an illusion to fake Logan's death, and returned to Bedford Hills Psychiatric Hospital, discarding his costume.
