Background
On current-generation consoles the game added SAPIEN technology for more realistic movement and player models, brought referees back onto the field, improved blocking and FieldSense, and added more than 1,000 new hitting and tackling animations. Franchise mode got mini games back for the first time since Madden NFL 12, more trade slots, more relocation cities and uniforms, and better free agency and drafting. Superstar mode returned with an offline mode called The League and an online one called Showdown. Like the games before it, it drew mixed reviews: critics liked the on-field improvements but said the modes around them felt unchanged.
