Development and release
John Madden Football hit the 3DO in North America on May 6, 1994, published by EA Sports. In Japan, Electronic Arts Victor released it as NFL Madden Football on May 28. The game was one of 34 launch titles for the 3DO’s European debut in June 1994, where sales surprised even the regional marketing manager, Chris Thompson. A version planned for the Atari Jaguar CD never materialized.
Reception
John Madden Football received largely positive reviews. Next Generation rated it four stars out of five, calling it the best arcade-style football game available. Entertainment Weekly gave a B grade, praising the large players and broadcast-quality video clips while noting the commentary could be more incisive. In 1996, GamesMaster ranked it 10th on their 3DO Top 10.
