International Date Line

The International Date Line is an imaginary line running from the North Pole to the South Pole that marks the shift from one calendar day to the next. It cuts through the Pacific Ocean, mostly following the 180° line of longitude but bending around certain territories and island groups. If you cross it heading east, you subtract a day; heading west, you add a day. Because the line is a cartographic convention rather than a legal boundary, cartographers have never fully agreed on its exact path, and nations whose waters it crosses have occasionally shifted it to suit their needs.

When traveling westward around the globe, you set your clock back one hour for every 15° of longitude crossed, then forward 24 hours when you cross the International Date Line. Traveling eastward, you set your clock forward one hour per 15° of longitude, then back 24 hours at the line. Adjusting by 24 hours generally means the date changes by one day.

The IDL is roughly based on the 180° meridian, which sits about halfway around the world from the prime meridian at Greenwich. In many places it follows that line exactly, but elsewhere it veers east or west to respect the political and economic ties of nearby areas. Starting from the north, it first deviates east of Wrangel Island and the Chukchi Peninsula (Wrangel Island itself sits right on the meridian). It then passes through the Bering Strait between the Diomede Islands, about 1.5 kilometers from each, before bending west of St. Lawrence Island and St. Matthew Island. Next, it runs between the U.S. Aleutian Islands (with Attu Island as the westernmost) and Russia’s Commander Islands, then curves southeast back to the 180° line. The first places to see daylight of a new day vary by season. Around the June solstice, it is any location in the Kamchatka Time Zone (UTC+12:00) far enough north to experience midnight sun. At the equinoxes, the first is uninhabited Millennium Island in Kiribati, the easternmost land west of the IDL. Near the December solstice, the first are Antarctic research stations using New Zealand Time (UTC+13:00) during summer, such as Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, McMurdo Station, Scott Base, and Zucchelli Station.
