Velociraptor
The franchise's clever pack hunters - bigger than the real animal, and home to Blue.
Velociraptor has major roles in both the novels and the films, which show it as an intelligent pack hunter much larger than the real animal. The franchise's raptors are actually modelled on the larger Deinonychus; Michael Crichton used the name Velociraptor because he found it more dramatic. On screen they were made with animatronics, CGI and performers in suits.
Scientists have since found that Velociraptor had feathers, but later films such as Jurassic World kept the featherless look for consistency with the earlier designs. At Spielberg's suggestion, Jurassic World added the raptor researcher Owen Grady, whose raptors are known as Blue, Charlie, Echo and Delta. Blue returns in the next two Jurassic World films and has become a fan favourite, and raptors also appear in Jurassic World Rebirth.
