Lore & Background

Inter was historically seen as the club of the Milan bourgeoisie (nicknamed bauscia), while Milan was supported mainly by the working class (nicknamed casciavid). This socioeconomic divide has largely been mitigated. The first derby was on 18 October 1908 in the Chiasso Cup, won 2–1 by Milan. Inter won the first Serie A title in 1929–30. In the 1960s, Sandro Mazzola (Inter) and Gianni Rivera (Milan) were key figures. Inter won the treble in 2009–10, including their first Champions League title since 1965. Inter won the 2022 Supercoppa Italiana 3–0 against Milan.

In Their Own Story

The San Siro breathes in unison, a sea of black and blue pressing against the red and black. The air is thick with anticipation, the kind that only a title-deciding derby can conjure. As the referee blows the whistle, the noise is deafening, a physical force pushing the players forward. In the second half, when Diego Milito finds the net for his second goal, the stadium erupts in a primal roar, a sound of liberation and triumph that echoes through the corridors of time.

Reader's Guide

The derby takes place at least twice a year via league fixtures, and has also occurred in the Coppa Italia, Champions League, and Supercoppa Italiana. Both teams play at the San Siro. The rivalry is one of the two major crosstown derbies always played in the same stadium, the other being the Derby della Capitale.
